Make the run up to Christmas a little more magical
With a church in every village that would put many cathedrals to shame and 60% of the population still attending church every Sunday, Gozo wears its (predominantly) Christian traditions proudly on its sleeve, which makes Christmas something of a speciality hereabouts.
If you’re ever feeling a little jaded that the origins of Christmas are drowned out by John Lewis ads and festive specials of Mrs Brown’s Boys, can we suggest a pre-Christmas booster holiday on Gozo? It’s the perfect place to inject some genuine Christmas spirit.
You’ll find events across the island throughout December, but here’s one of particular note:
The extremely popular Carols by Candlelight by the Schola Cantorum Jubilate (perhaps the premier choir on Gozo) takes place on 15 and 16 December at St Augustine’s Priory in Victoria.
As Gozo News notes, “this magical, festive concert touches the hearts with lovely Christmas classics and other contemporary compositions, and should be included in everyone’s Christmas schedule and attracts locals and foreigners, some saying that they even plan their holidays around the same dates just so they can attend this event.”
>With Victoria’s Astra Theatre enjoying its 50th birthday in 2018, you’ll find lots more entertainment on Gozo in 2018
After the concert, the cloister of the priory will become a banquet hall and you’ll be able to enjoy a uniquely Gozitan take on a festive dinner. Tickets for the concert and dinner cost €70 per person, and you can find more details, including where to get tickets, here.
