Girardu - by Jules

Following a private pathway I walked through welcoming white painted doors into a small hall. My first impression of the house was its character and homeliness. It’s deliciously ‘sweet’.

The open plan living space is characterised by charming period stone arches throughout that connect the space in a natural way. Girardu has managed that rare trick: to embellish its period features and complement them with tasteful modern furnishings.

It’s hard to believe such a hidden gem is so close to town. It’s a wonderful spot for lazy days at home yet with only a short walk into Victoria you can have the best of both worlds.

There are two ways of reaching the first floor landing’s 3 bedrooms via the external stone staircase or using the narrow stairway from the hall.

Bedrooms 1& 2 have 2 single beds and an en-suite shower (and bedroom 2 enjoys sweeping views of the countryside).

Bedroom 3 has a double bed and en-suite shower.

Each bedroom has retained its original period tiles adding a burst of authentic character and colour to the well-furnished rooms.

The lounge area makes a homely relaxing Gozo retreat for couples and families with a flat screen TV and Wi-Fi for cooler days or escaping the sun.

Through open stone arches is a spacious dining area with classic farmhouse kitchen.

The light through the pool terrace doors creates a bright warm welcoming space.

Girardu

The great benefit of Girardu is its proximity to the many shops cafes bars restaurants and historic sites of Victoria. A short walk – all of 5 minutes - and you are in the centre of town. Known to most as Rabat Victoria (the name was given in 1887 to hour the British Queen’s golden jubilee) is the capital of Gozo.

Victoria’s centrepiece is the historic citadel an ancient fortified city that once offered protection against marauding corsairs and invading Ottomans. Today it offers superb views over the whole island. Within the citadel’s walls you’ll find many of the city’s main historical attractions: The Cathedral Museum grain silos the Folklore Museum Gozo’s Nature Museum the Old Prison and the Old Gunpowder Magazine Battery and World War II shelter.

Victoria’s other centrepiece is the fascinating Pjazza Indipendenza (Independence Square) known as ‘it-Tokk’. St George’s Basilica stands in a smaller square in the old town surrounded by a fantastic web of narrow back streets. They’re the oldest in town and well worth exploring. This square is also very popular for its casual dining in laid-back cafés.
