Currency & Banks

The Maltese currency is the euro (€).

Banks in Gozo are normally open until early afternoon from Monday to Friday, and until midday on Saturday – though some banks/branches work longer hours. Opening times may also differ between summer and winter months.

You will find a number of ATM machines from which to withdraw money at any time; though it is also possible to exchange foreign currency notes in banks, exchange bureaux and 24-hour exchange machines.

International bankcards are also accepted.

Driving

In both Malta and Gozo, driving is on the left. Speed limits range between 35km/h and 60km/h depending on whether you are in a built-up area or open countryside so look out for the signs!

Electricity

Electricity is 220-240 volts and the frequency of the supply is 50 hertz. The sockets and plugs are three rectangular pin plugs (in the same triangular layout as in the UK). Converters and adapters are easy to find on the Island.

Health

Although Gozo General Hospital offers excellent medical care, it is wise to ensure you (and anyone travelling with you) are up-to-date on routine and recommended dental/medical health checks and immunisations (as recommended by your country of residence). It is also advised that you consult with your doctor for specific information related to your needs and your medical history.

If you are receiving special medical treatment at home, you should bring with you a medical prescription or a letter of introduction from your family doctor, in case you need to purchase particular medicines while in Gozo. Visitors from EU member states should make sure that they have a European Health Insurance card (EHIC) but for all visitors (irrespective of nationality) it is advisable to take out a personal medical insurance policy.
