International Fireworks Festival explodes into Gozo
In Xaghra on 23 April? Look up...
On 1 May 2004, Malta (and Gozo) entered the European Union. Every year since, the islands have celebrated with the Malta International Fireworks Festival, and this year part of the competition will be held on – and above - Gozo.
23 April is the date for your diary if you’re holidaying on Gozo this month, when the competition will move to Xaghra. You can catch the fireworks a week earlier and later too, but you’ll have to be on Malta to do it.
The festival has rightfully earned the title "International," as over the years it has attracted foreign pyrotechnic companies from as far afield as Australia, Canada and Venezuela. Teams closer to home have included Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal and the good old UK.
This year, Gozo will play host to three teams’ displays, two in the international competition, and one Maltese entry competing for national honours. Times are as follows:
9.30pm Dance of fire – Ukraine
10.00pm Macedo's Pirotecnia – Portugal
10.30pm St Mary Fireworks Factory – Ghaxaq Malta
As Xaghra is a great spot for good food too, why not make a night of it? And if you’re still looking for a Gozo holiday villa or farmhouse, take a look here.
