Fast ferry to link Valletta with Gozo

Written by Julia Crosthwaite

The Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, has announced plans for a new “fast ferry” between Gozo and Malta, linking Mgarr with Valletta’s Gra

Are we about to get a faster way of transferring to Gozo?

This is rather exciting news. The service could start from 2018. If you’re planning a Gozo holiday, that could be good news for a number of reasons.

1. Reduced transfer times

Practically every Gozo holiday currently begins the same way: with a landing at Malta’s Luqa airport and a drive by taxi, bus or hire car to Cirkewwa, Malta’s harbour for departures to Gozo. It may be a pleasant enough journey, and the sea crossing is lovely, but it does take around 45 minutes to get to the harbour. Valletta, on the other hand, is a 15 minute hop from the airport. With a fast ferry, you could find your journey time to your Gozo holiday accommodation dramatically reduced.

2. Valletta, faster

You’re holidaying on Gozo and fancy a day out on Malta. Chances are, Valletta will be high on your ‘to do’ list. With a direct fast ferry, you could travel straight to Malta’s capital and back, with no need for a car.

3. Greater Gozo holiday freedom

One of the great joys of a Gozo holiday is the feeling of being on a tiny island, away from the stresses of the world. But there’s no denying the fact that a fast ferry straight to the heart of Malta could add a different dimension to your Gozo holiday. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, I should add that the fast ferry intends to start operating with 4 services a day, and is initially intended to make life easier for commuters who’ve been asking for this service for years.

We should assume, then, that the service will operate at either end of business hours. But that doesn’t mean travellers couldn’t use it if the timings work, nor does it mean that the service won’t be extended if it proves popular. Of course, if you’re planning your holiday for this year and need to arrange a transfer to Gozo via the regular route, we know a few ways of making the journey much less stressful.
