Love theatre? Discover two excellent reasons to enjoy a Gozo holiday in 2018
We’ll admit it, Gozo is not the obvious choice for a theatre break, but we think you’ll be surprised by what’s on offer, especially in 2018.
Holiday on Gozo and you’ll find a virtually year-round programme of shows, musicals, plays, operas and choral/orchestral events. Next year, that programme should swell significantly as Victoria’s Astra Theatre celebrates its half century.
Special events for 2018 are just being announced, and in its golden anniversary year the theatre is really pulling out the stops.
Jesus Christ Superstar
In March Hugh Wooldridge will direct an official presentation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar.
Speaking to Gozo News, Wooldridge said, ““I am so happy to be in these magical islands. As a child I remember older people talking about the bravery of Malta and Gozo during the Second World War. Later, I had friends who had made Malta their holiday destination of choice.
“Jesus Christ Superstar is one of my most favourite musicals and I have directed productions of it all over the world. For the 50th anniversary of Teatru Astra we are celebrating a brand new production involving all of the community.”
La Traviata
Another highlight of the Astra’s birthday year will be an entirely new production of Verdi’s La Traviata, specially designed for the Astra under the musical direction of Joseph Vella.
The flagship of Festival Mediterranea 2018, booking for La Traviata is now open for performances on the 25th and 27th of October.
