Stocks - by Jules

“Stocks is one of a private suite of four farmhouses, all secluded, in a quiet spot in the village of Ghasri.

A private front door opens into a wide hallway with light illuminating a large and bright open-plan living space. Beyond these feature arches you can see miles of countryside, showcased through wide terrace doors. A picturesque and idyllic scene clearly defined by Tal Gurdan, a flat-topped hill propping up one of Gozo’s iconic landmarks, the Tal Gurdan Lighthouse. Built in 1853, 180 metres above sea level, this picture is clearly visible from the terrace stretching the length of Stocks.

All rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished. One benefit stands out for us. The accommodation is cottage style all on one level, making it easy to navigate throughout, including living space and Stocks three bedrooms. This has advantages for those with mobility issues. The outside terrace also reflects similar ease.

Stocks provides a light and generous family holiday home. Its peaceful location means you can be sure to “get away from it all “ and enjoy hours of relaxation. At the same time, Stocks is a great base to explore the riches of Gozo” JULES

PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

GROUND FLOOR

The living accommodation comprises an open plan lounge, kitchen and dining room, defined by feature limestone arches.

The lounge includes a large plasma TV and a wood-burning fire, making the property easy to enjoy in cooler months. Both the lounge and dining table have clear views of countryside as the terrace doors run adjacent.

The kitchen is overly generous in space with a Mediterranean feel, finished in painted cream wood. Well equipped, it’s position is very handy for catering both outside and in.

All 3 bedrooms continue to offer a generous footprint. Bedroom 1 off the lounge has twin beds and ensuite shower room. Bedroom 2 also has twin beds and an ensuite. Bedroom 3 is most definitely the master bedroom with iconic terrace views and a “his and hers” ensuite.

The ground floor also benefits from a separate toilet.

Additional:

All rooms are equipped with Air Conditioning units operated by an electronic coin box on a pay as you use basis (€1 & €2 coins). A screen displays the credit remaining with each AC unit consuming approximately € 2 per night.

Prices exclude the Malta Eco Tax – a requirement by Maltese law to be collected from all guests on arrival. This applies to those age 18 and over and consists of €0.50c per person for each night’s stay, to a maximum of €5 per person for each continuous stay. This is paid in Euro currency only and will be collected by the owner on check in.

Outdoors:

The private pool and terrace are also of good proportion.

The terrace that runs along the rear of Stocks is a haven for relaxation and soaking up the countryside ambiance.

The dining table and chairs are complemented by a BBQ for al fresco family dining.

Ghasri

If you take the Victoria-Gharb road to the Aqueduct and fork right you will find the smallest village on the island nestled between the hills of iz-Zebbug and Ghammar.

The village of Ghasri sits amongst the fields and valleys of rural Gozo.

A Gozitan landmark, Ta' Ġurdan Lighthouse rises 161 metres above sea level. This was constructed in 1851 and is still functioning. Originally, the lighthouse had 21 purpose-built oil lamps, seven on each of its three sides. The brass reflectors were silver plated, which in addition to a system of large lenses, made the beam visible a full 38 miles away.

The beam is less dramatic today both because the intensity has been reduced (due to improved maritime navigation technology that makes it less necessary) and because of light pollution from increased street lighting.

The walk up to the lighthouse is quite steep but is lovely with breathtaking views. If the lighthouse attendant is around, you may be able to take a look inside, and perhaps climb the spiral staircase to the top. Even without him, you can walk around the flat top of the hill amid the ruins of a colonial military observation post, and take in the stunning 360-degree panorama.

Wied l-Għasri, the Għasri Valley, is a fjord-looking tiny beach wedged between high cliffs and is a marvelous place for country walks or a bike ride, and extremely popular with divers who like to explore the underwater caves. The very narrow and secluded bay is also a haven for those who seek a quiet bathing area

The valley begins at Ta' Dbieġi Hill before winding down through the village of l-Għasri, and on between iż-Żebbuġ and Ta' Ġurdan Hill to meet the sea between impressive cliffs. Wied il-L-Għasri is very popular with divers who like to explore the surrounding underwater caves.

From Ghasri village square a road leads to the fabulous valley of Wied l-Ghasri 2.3km away from your Gozo holiday farmhouse. The Wied l-Ghasri area is a marvelous place for country walks or rewarding cycle rides especially in winter and spring. The valley ends at the sea wedged between high cliffs where a secluded inlet makes an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling and together with the sea surrounding it, a popular spot for diving.

On the way be sure to stop at the charming old chapel dedicated to the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The two shallow bays of Xwejni and Qbajjar are both 4.1 Km away. Next to each other, they have small pebbly beaches and rocky stretches that lead to clear blue water. Excellent for swimming they are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike and are popular with divers, especially beginners. You’ll also find a few fishing boats here with a couple of bars and restaurants on the seafront.

The feast of Ghasri is celebrated on the first or second Sunday in June and is dedicated to Corpus Christi. Victoria has two big feasts one in the third week of July and the other on 15 August.

The closest beach is just 5 km away and there is also a supermarket, The Lighthouse, 900 meters from the property. The closest Restaurants are Ta Salvina and Grazie Mille 2.6 km walk in the village of Gharb. A little further, 3.2km, you will find the Kempinski Hotel, one of the island's 5* hotels and restaurant, Tatitas, in the village square.

The capital, Victoria is 3.5 km away with a bus stop 100 metres from the property.

The 308 bus will bring you to the centre of Victoria where you will find a wide range of shops cafes bars and restaurants - and a wealth of history.
