Tal Moghoz - by Jules
“A quiet alley brings us to the red front door of Tal Moghoz. It’s hard to imagine a pool space as large and a house with 5 bedrooms, through this wee door. Walking through the lobby, facing us, are large oval terrace doorways stretching the long hallway. Light and a sense of serenity shine in and embrace the country house.
The outside pool terrace is a heavenly picture of sunbeds, dining space and comfy chairs for relaxation. A rural haven, we could imagine a large family spending days of fun enjoying the pool, BBQ and surrounding tranquillity.
The owner is proud to inform us, Tal Moghoz, is two centuries old. Certainly, it has been carefully restored and extended beyond its former glory. Charming limestone ceiling arches and stone walls have been carefully retained and enhanced throughout and blend well with the contemporary kitchen with its vintage red finish. This combines seamlessly with its lounge and dining space.
A not so “wee”, this palatial Country home with huge hospitality is waiting to welcome its next guests. Discover what is beyond the mediterranean door and book a fabulous Gozo holiday in this Country retreat” - Jules

Location Map Xewkija, Gozo, Malta
Directions
Xewkija
Xewkija is the oldest village on the Island and one of Gozo’s largest. Lying mid-way between Mġarr Harbour and Victoria, its best-known feature, The Rotunda, is also the largest church on the Island. Built in the twentieth century and dedicated to St John the Baptist, the church's dome measures 28m across by 75m tall and is the third largest unsupported dome in the world. Hardly surprisingly, this distinct landmark is visible across much of the Island. The church was built as a replacement for an older church, the original stonework of which is housed in The Rotunda’s Sculpture Museum (you can take the lift to the dome balcony for stunning views over Gozo). This church is also renowned for being the Seat of the Knights of the Order of St. John (also known as the Knights of Malta). The festa is held on the closest Sunday to the 24th of June each year.
Aside from the church, Xewkija has a long and distinguished history. Some of the best Gozitan stone masons and decorators of Maltese stone originated here in this village, while Xewkija’s fishermen are skilled in making traditional cane fish traps - a craft dating back for generations. On the 27th November 1678, Xewkija became the first parish outside Victoria. Intriguingly, the village name derives from an Arabic word meaning ‘an area of thorny wasteland’, though it bears no such resemblance of this image today.
On entering the village from Mġarr Road, you can see the remains of a Knights-period windmill which was constructed during the period of Grand Master Perellos (1697-1720). This mill has a particularly unique feature as the ground floor is shaped like an octagon to display the eight principal wind directions. Look too at the chapel, Madonna tal-Hniena (Our Lady of Charity), dedicated to St Bartholomew. As you leave the village, stop by the tower and newly restored chapel of St Cecilia (the oldest chapel in Gozo).
For a scenic experience, stroll along the beautiful coastline beyond the village, the Bay of Mgarr and the Mgarr ix-Xini valley. Both attract many visitors, from photographers and walkers to water sports enthusiasts.
